Taking the Digital Underwater Photography course at Jack’s Diving Locker gives you the opportunity to photograph the amazing marine life of Hawai’i such as moorish idols, raccoon butterfly fish, moray eels, or green sea turtles. Whether memorable snapshots or stunning photos, these digital images can be printed and framed or posted on the internet to share with friends.

This course is primarily designed for today’s point and shoot cameras and gives you step-by-step instructions on preparation, basics of underwater shooting, and environmentally friendly diving practices. More advanced topics such as selecting composition, adjusting exposure, and understanding white balance will also be covered. Students will have a chance to download and critique photos with the instructor. The academics in this course are offered in a traditional format with manual OR on-line through PADI eLearning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be awarded the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty.

Underwater Photographer Specialty Course Details

Cost:

  • $295 plus tax (includes tanks & weights)
  • Private Instruction available for an additional $300.
  • PADI Digital UW Photographer eLearning Course ($138- subject to change annually)

Prerequisites: Junior Open Water Certification. Minimum age – 12 yrs old. (age 10-11 with Instructor approval)

We Provide: Instruction, 2 boat dives, tanks, weights, light lunch and drinks.

Students Provide:

  • Digital underwater camera (GoPro available for daily rent – $50 camera only or $75 with light)
  • PADI eLearning or Manual, log book, BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask/snorkel/fins, and underwater timing device (dive computer recommended). Rental gear available.
  • Computer or tablet to download and edit pictures
  • Discounts: 10% off most regular priced merchandise

Underwater Photographer Specialty Course Schedule

Duration: 1 Day - Boat dive followed by Photography Post Processing with intstructor

Preparation:

  • Complete Digital UW Photographer eLearning Course
  • Day 1 (8:00 am – 4:00 pm):
  • Preparation: Set up camera
  • Boat: Digital UW Photo Dive 1
  • Boat: Digital UW Photo Dive 2
  • Post Boat: Download pictures and review, log dives. (Plan to bring your own computer or tablet to download or edit. Be sure your preferred digital processing software is loaded so you can use it.)
  • Certifications issued upon successful completion.

Things to Know:

Review the Continuing Education Administrative Document. If you have a YES to a medical question, you will need to get a doctor’s approval before starting the course. You may use this Medical Statement.

Flying or Driving to Altitude After Diving: If you complete the open water experience, it is recommended you wait at least 12 hours before flying or driving to altitude. If you make more than one open water dive on the same day; or, dive over two or more days, wait 18 hours.

Master Scuba Diver Rating

The PADI Master Scuba Diver rating is the highest rating in non-professional recreational diving. To achieve this rating you must complete the following certifications: Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, and 5 PADI Specialty courses. In addition, divers must have at least 50 logged dives. When completing these requirements at Jack’s Diving Locker, recipients will have their names engraved on a plaque that is displayed in our shop to honor this achievement.
