JDL's Ocean Fair: The beginning.

“18 years ago,the community did not have a lot of options, at that time, for education about the ocean; for understanding local sea life, fun for kids, games or family events happening here locally. There was only a “Coral Reef Ecology Day” at the old Keauhou Beach Hotel, but the hotel was condemned. And then there was the old "Kona Classic" which was an underwater photo contest. Jacks Diving Locker wanted to have a place for Ocean education that combined all these topics that brought the community together for education, fun and to help support the local marine environment.”

Since the beginning of the Ocean Fair,JDL featured guest speakers, who were experts in their field to talk about local marine animals like sharks. Speakers such as Emmy award winning cinematographer, Marty Snyderman, sharing their expertise with our Ocean Fair attendees.Also, free SCUBA and snorkeling lessons in the pool, underwater photo contests, and games for kids and families have been favorites of Ocean Fair since conception.

What happened to Ocean Fair during COVID?

DuringCOVID, we held a modified Ocean Fair event with a socially distant style tent sale in the parking lot and virtual speakers. We streamed live all day on YouTube. It was a first for us, but we had to adapt to the times and get creative to keep spreading our knowledge and love for the ocean. It was a tremendous success.

"We wanted to still have an Ocean Fair event during COVID, especially as a place to bring community together in such challenging times of the pandemic.  It was a way for people to focus on an uplifting subject like the Ocean with amazing speakers, and online activities with great engagement from the audience.”

2022 Ocean Fair is right around the corner. Saturday, April 30th 8am-4pm.

Ocean Fair has a new theme every year. Our 2022 Ocean Fair theme is "Explore Local Reefs.”

We are excited to share with our JDL friends and visitors our love for Kona’s reefs. From local conservation education to underwater photography, the expert speakers at Ocean Fair this year are amazing.
